What is Shirodhara?

Shirodhara is a form of Ayurveda therapy that involves gently pouring liquids over the forehead and can be one of the steps involved in Panchakarma. The name comes from the Sanskrit words shiro (head) and dhara (flow).

A stress-releasing treatment during which warm oil is poured over the third eye, forehead and temples to soothe and calm the nervous system. It assists with treating stress, skin conditions and insomnia, while also enhancing emotional balance, helping to get in touch with your higher being. How Is Shirodhara Therapy Performed?

Shirodhara involves pouring of warm herbal oils on the forehead in a continuous stream. The procedure of shirodhara uses about 2 litres of herbal oil that have medicinal properties to cause mental relaxation and induce sleep. The Ayurvedic oil is contained in a small container hung above that pours the oil in small stream in oscillating manner. Since the oil keeps falling on your forehead, precaution is taken to prevent it from entering the eyes and ears. It is therefore essential to get this oil treatment done at a professional shirodhara day spa. The oil treatment in shirodhara lasts for about 60 minutes and you may be given a mild head massage during or after the procedure.
